Who we are
We are Matt, Dave and Nick. Professional Firefighters in Washington, D.C., with over 50 years collectively in the fire service, and we created the GMD. To be honest, we were not looking to develop and sell a product, but solve a problem we encountered frequently. With the encouragement of co-workers, fueled by their excitement for what we had developed, we became entrepreneurs.
Being assigned to a Rescue Company, a major function of our job is to search, find and remove victims of house fires. When traditional methods to remove victims don’t work, many firefighters turn to webbing to assist them. We found ourselves carrying multiple pieces of webbing in different lengths and configurations for every scenario. The reality became, no matter how much we practiced and planned, when it came time to execute our methods they took too long or didn’t translate well in different environments. It seemed there was no one way that could address the many variables and challenges a fire ground would throw at you.
There had to be a better way
We looked for existing products on the market. Many were good, but didn’t meet our every need, and others were at price points that were too high for our liking. We wanted a device that was light, fit in a pocket, easily deployed, intuitive, adjustable, stayed in place when installed, allowed for changes in body position of the rescuer, a low lifting point to move a victim over debris or traverse stairs, and useable in R.I.T scenarios. So we put our heads together, and that’s when the GMD was born.
We developed a tool that not only met our needs, but exceeded our expectations as we continue finding new uses for the GMD. As it turned out, our co-workers loved it too. So now we are bringing the GMD to you. We believe that once you try it, you’ll replace the webbing and theories your pocket with the GMD and a field tested plan of execution.
